How Fast Can I Lose Weight?

Over time the absolute fastest a person can lose weight is in the range of one third to one half pound per day.

Any weight loss faster than this is usually due to loss of fluids and not burning body fat. This weight will always be rapidly regained when the person begins to drink normal amounts of fluids again.

How Do You Calculate My Rate Of Weight Loss?

The rate is calculated by:

Calories of Food Consumed per Day

- Calories of Food Needed per Day-Basal Metabolic Rate

/ 3500 Calories in a Pound

= Pounds Lost per Day


To help you verify this here is an example for you below:

Let's take a 36 year female weighing 170 pounds and calculate her BASAL METABOLIC RATE. (See Daily Calorie Calculator).

1501 calories per day is her "Metabolism" or Metabolic Rate (the number of calories per day to keep her weight constant).

If she goes on a 1000 calorie per day weight loss program (A FASTING PROGRAM), her rate of weight loss must be taken from energy stored in the body (usually body fat):

1501 Calories - 1000 calories = 501 calories per day lost


We know that there are 3500 calories in a pound of stored body fat so we express the rate of speed of her weight loss as a fraction:
3500 calories in a pound / 500 calories lost or
1/7 of a pound per day or
1 pound per week or
4 pounds per month

Unfortunately in my opinion most people are so used to "Instant Gratification" in our society that will not accept so slow a rate of weight loss, plus they have to deal with hunger.

Most get frustrated, depressed, discouraged, and quit which is why 95% of people attempting weight loss fail.

Anyone attempting weight loss should understand this and accept it if they are to be successful in their weight loss attempts.
